Superioress/Prioress
Titles changed after the Ursulines joined the Roman Union in 1945. Before 1945 the sisters were called Mother, the leader of the Community, the Superioress, was called Reverend Mother. After 1945 the term Superioress changed to Prioress. After 1972 only the Reverend Mother, or Prioress was called Mother. Today, only the Mother General in Rome is called Mother. There was always a close liaison between the Reverend Mother and the Principal. In the 1960s the roles were differentiated and the Principal had more independence and responsibility. After 1971 most of the sisters reverted to their baptismal names.
